Pounding rain from a tropical storm swelled rivers and sent walls of water crushing into two southern Philippine cities in the thick of night, killing at least 436 people, many caught in their beds, officials said Saturday.

Philippine Red Cross Secretary General Gwen Pang told The Associated Press that the latest toll was based on a body count in funeral parlors. She said that 215 died in Cagayan de Oro and 144 in nearby Iligan, and the rest in several other southern and central provinces.

Breaking News of the Day: Kim Jong-il, the Supreme Leader of North Korea, passed away yesterday of exhaustion, according to local media reports. He was 69.

A North Korean state media announcement said the dictator died of “physical fatigue” during a train ride.

Kim was known to have been sick for some time, reportedly suffering two strokes which affected his mobility and speech. He was also said to have been suffering from pancreatic cancer.

The so-called “Dear Leader” officially took over the role three years after the passing of his father, Kim Il-sung, in 1994.

No word yet on who might succeed him, though his son, Jong Un, was reportedly being groomed for the position. Other reports suggest his brother-in-law, Chang Sung-taek, may already be the de facto leader.

The South Korean military has been put on high alert following news of Kim Jong-il’s passing.

Tattoo artist Ryan Fitzgerald from Dayton, OH was hit with a $100,000 lawsuit last week by his ex-girlfriend Rossie Brovent. She claims that her boyfriend was supposed to tattoo a scene from Narnia on her back but instead tattooed an image of a pile of excrement with flies buzzing around it.

Apparently, Ryan found out that Rossie had cheated with a long-time friend of his, but instead of confronting her about it he acted like everything was normal and hatched a plan for revenge. Originally, Rossie tried to have Ryan charged with assault, but the ingenious tattoo artist had covered his bases by plying Rossie with wine and tequila shots and getting her to sign a consent form that stated the design was “at the artist’s discretion.”

No word from Rossie on whether the illicit night of passion with Ryan’s friend was worth it. Moral of the story? Never cheat on a tattoo artist.

Stop Beating Students of the Day: UC Berkeley students clashed with police this afternoon after several tents were set up outside Sproul Hall as part of an Occupy-style protest against tuition and fee hikes as well funding cuts for public education.

Officers in riot gear used their batons in an effort break through a human chain of peaceful “Occupy Cal” protesters that had formed to prevent police from tearing down the tents.

At least seven people were arrested, and the tents were eventually cleared away, but returned later on. According to reports, police plan to remove the tents again later tonight, and a second “showdown” with the remaining protesters is expected.

UC Berkeley Chancellor Robert Birgeneau told students earlier this week that the university supports the spirit of Occupy Wall Street, but will not allow camping on its grounds.

Milestone of the Day: Danica May Camacho, born just before midnight last night at Jose Fabella Memorial Hospital in Manila, was symbolically chosen by the United Nations to represent the seven billionth baby born on Earth.

Though the UN named October 31st Seven Billion Day, some groups questioned the accuracy of the estimate, saying the seven billionth baby will more likely be born next year.

Matej Gaspar of Croatia and the family of 12-year-old Adnan Nevic of Bosnia Herzogovina — the fifth and sixth billionth babies, respectively — have voiced complaints that the UN celebrated their births, only to ignore them in the years since.

“We saw Kofi Annan as almost like a godfather to him,” says Jasminko, Adnan’s father. “He held me up when I was two days old but since then we have heard nothing from them.”
